Today the first 700bar hydrogen refueling station opened in the city of Holstebro in Denmark. The station enables a fast and uniform refueling of hydrogen in less than three minutes in accordance with the SAE J2601 standard. The high storage pressure provides fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) with a driving range comparable to conven-tional gasoline powered vehicles. The station opening marks the first steps towards a countrywide network of stations in Denmark by 2015. This is to ensure availability of hydrogen for the market introduction of FCEV's around 2015 as is the aim of leading car manufacturers. The station is developed by H2 Logic A/S and operated by the energy company Vestforsyning A/S, with support from the Danish EUDP program.
Enabling a widespread use of electricity for transport in all vehicle sizes and with the same convenience as enjoyed today requires the availability of hydrogen powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV).
The new 700bar hydrogen refueling station in Denmark enables refueling of enough hydrogen to go long distances of several hundred kilometers and with a refueling time of less than three minutes. The fast refueling and plentiful of fuel onboard the vehicle allow car manufacturers to design FCEV's with the same comfort and size as conventional gasoline vehicles without compromising vehicle range.
Through decades of global research and development efforts sufficient standards are in place to commence planning of market introduction. The 700bar station in Denmark thus uses a globally standardized refueling nozzle and follows a recently published refueling standard the SAE J2601. This standard ensures the same fast and uniform refueling of hydrogen in less than three minutes to any FCEV at any hydrogen station worldwide that complies with the standard.
Leading car manufacturer's aim for market introduction of FCEV's around 2015 in world regions where a hydrogen refueling infrastructure is available. The new hydrogen station in Denmark is therefore the first step in a planned countrywide network to be established before 2015. This will ensure availability of hydrogen fuel in the major cities and with less than 150 km to the nearest station in the country as a whole. Already today the new 700bar station enables full cross-country driving on one refueling, the only electric vehicle technology so far to achieve this in Denmark.
The establishment of the hydrogen station is part of the LINK2009 project, where H2 Logic the past few years has conducted development of its new 700bar fast-fill technology. The Danish Energy Agency EUDP program has provided support to the total project budget of €5 million.
At the station opening the Mercedes B-Class F-Cell was showcased and Sales Manager of Mercedes-Denmark A/S made a speech about the recent efforts within Daimler on FCEV commercialization.
